This collection primarily consists of Women in Film Crystal and Lucy Award ceremonies held in Los Angeles, California. Other materials in the collection encompass WIF Film Festivals and other WIF special events, clips and television programs featuring work by or interviews with women honored in the awards ceremonies, public service announcements, television programs about women's issues, news coverage of WIF events and other topics, demo reels submitted by performers, electronic press kits, and movie trailers. The collection consists of 1/2 in. VHS (NTSC) videocassettes, 1/2 in. Betacam SP videocassettes, and 3/4 in. U-matic videocassettes.

Women in Film (WIF) was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1973, after journalist Sue Cameron wrote a column published in the Hollywood reporter that revealed the results a Writers Guild of America (WGA) confidential survey that demonstrated that women wrote only two percent of all television series scripts. Tichi Wilkerson Kassel, then the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Hollywood reporter, soon convened a meeting in her office with seven other women representing various disciplines within the film and television industries, Marcia Borie, Norma Zarky, Zepha Bogert, Nancy Malone, Portia Nelson, Georgeanne Heller, and Sue Cameron. It was decided at that time to create an organization so that women in the entertainment and media industries could benefit from the power of women coming together to address important professional and social issues. From its grassroots beginnings in 1973, membership in WIF has grown to over 2,500 in the Los Angeles area and beyond. These members are now part of a network of forty international WIF organizations, representing more than 10,000 members worldwide. Chief among the events and programs WIF offers are its Crystal and Lucy Awards. WIF's Crystal Award was established in 1977 to honor outstanding individuals who have helped expand the role of women within the entertainment and media industries. The Lucy Award for innovation in television was established in 1994 and given annually to talented individuals who exemplify the extraordinary accomplishments embodied in the life and work of Lucille Ball, accomplished actress, comedienne, producer, director, studio owner, and creator. One of the many philanthropic endeavors of WIF is its award-winning Public Service Announcement Production Program, which provides a unique service to the community by producing and distributing pro-bono public service announcements on issues and services critical to women and children. The program, begun in 1993, fills a crucial gap by assisting charity organizations with limited means enlist support for and publicize their services to the community-at-large. To date, the program has completed over 50 campaigns and has received numerous honors and recognition. The Women in Film Foundation, established in 1981, is the philanthropic arm of WIF. The Foundation works not only to further the overall goals of the organization, but also create, fund, and administer philanthropic programs that support the professional development and individual creative projects of women in the entertainment and media industries, and to preserve the historical contributions of women in film and television.
