Abstract:

Contains a small amount of material relating to the society's organization and founding, including constitution and lists of board members, annual reports, programs from anniversaries and other celebrations, and minutes from monthly and special meetings. Also includes printed and other miscellany from the museum and artifacts collection, oral history program, special programs and field trips, seminars, membership, publicity, and funding proposals.
Also includes materials related to Thomas Chinn, the Society's president, including biographical material, correspondence, and a copy of his syllabus, "Chinese pioneers and their contribution," prepared for the Oakland Museum volunteer tour guide training. With this is some correspondence between H.K. Wong and a researcher, relating to the history of Chinese in northern Calif., particularly Weaverville and Tehama Co., which includes a photocopy of transcriptions from local marriage and death registers.
Layout design for tiles at museum entrance; and, proclamation to the society from Yin-shou Che, Consul General of the Republic of China, on the dedication of the Gateway to Chinatown, their gift to the people of San Francisco.

The Chinese Historical Society of America was conceived in late 1962 by Thomas W. Chinn, C.H. Kwock, Chingwah Lee, H.K. Wong, and Dr. Thomas W.S. Wu and founded the following year as a non-profit organization with a mission to study, record, acquire, and preserve materials and artifacts relating to the history of the Chinese living in America.
