Abstract:

This collection of records from the contemporary San Juan Water District begins in 1854 with one of the state's early ditch companies and concludes in 1994 with the 140th anniversary of the company. There are approximately 600 items in the collection in various formats. These are not the corporate archives but rather disparate materials that were perhaps gathered together at the time of the 140th anniversary.
From the early period, 1854-1867, the American River Water & Mining Co. is documented in a Minute Book that records operations in Sacramento County. Information about the C.W. Clarke era (1887-1899) can be found in the transcript of a legal action in 1898, Sacramento Electric, Gas & Railway Co. vs. C.W. Clarke, which includes details of Clarke's water management operations.
Material for the North Fork Ditch Company (covering the period 1899-1954) is more extensive, including correspondence, legal, financial and operations materials, some personnel documents and a collection of newspapers clippings referencing the history of the company. Some of this material was associated with Loring K. Jordan, who managed the company for much of the period. His personal notebook documents his activities in the 1920s and an office journal covers 1946-1947 in great detail.
The San Juan (Suburban) Water District documentation is similar in outline to the above with the addition of extensive public relations material, some of which was generated at the time of the 140th anniversary in 1994. Photographs and corporate publications are included in this series.

Note:

The water rights held today by the San Juan Water District derive from claims obtained by the American River Water & Mining Co. which was formed in 1854 to supply water to the mines operating in the Sacramento Valley. In 1887 the company passed to Crawford W. Clarke who operated the company as the C. W. Clarke Water Company until 1899, when he incorporated it as the North Fork Ditch Company. North Fork Ditch became the principal water supplier to the agricultural colonies of Fair Oaks, Orangevale, and Citrus Heights.
During this period, the corporation was subjected to various speculations involving other water rights and in the construction of the Folsom Dam to provide for flood control, irrigation, and hydro-electric power. In 1954 when Folsom Dam was about eighty-five percent completed, the North Fork Ditch Company was sold to the San Juan Suburban Water District, which dropped "Suburban" from its name in 1994, the year celebrating the 140th anniversary of the company.
