Abstract:

Letters are addressed to his father, James Campbell, and his sister, Rebecca. Bulk of the letters are written from locations in Nevada and Sierra counties (Nevada City, Wolf Creek, Smith Flat, Brandy City, etc.). A few come from locations in Washington Territory (Port Townsend, Port Discovery, Port Ludlow). He describes these areas, life in California, his mining efforts, events of note (Vigilence Committee, fire in Nevada City, Civil War).

Note:

Born in 1831, in Nova Scotia, the author moved to Maine in 1850 where he spent three years working in timber and farming. Around 1854, he went to California via ship. From then until sometime after 1891, when he returned home permanently, the author moved around California mining and working various jobs. Between 1861 and 1865, he went north to Washington Territory, working in the timber business and making one trip to British Columbia to join in the gold rush there.
