Note:

Charles John Reed III (06/28/1858 04/13/1933) was a mineralogist and inventor. His work in these fields earned him the John Scott Medal in 1906 for his speed-jack as well as the opportunity to work with Thomas Edison in 1890. He would later establish Reed Zinc Company Incorporated and Reed Reduction Company in San Francisco. Reed was born to Thomas Miller Reed and Julia A. Thomas in Jasper Co., Iowa. In Burlington, Iowa on September 9, 1886, he married Mary J. Crawford. They would have three children: Jay Demming, Mollie C., and Chas. J. Reed. In Burlington, Reed worked as a professor at Burlington High School from about 1884 to 1899. While working as a professor he would patent at least 3 inventions, these being for magnetic separators, a battery, and battery applications.
