Yosemite National Park (Calif.) -- History

Note:

James Mason Hutchings was born in England on February 10, 1820. He emigrated to the United States in 1848, and to California a year later during the Gold Rush. After becoming wealthy mining and losing his money, he regained his wealth through publishing. After hearing reports of a magnificent waterfall in the Sierras, on July 5, 1855 Hutchings led the second tourist party into the Yosemite Valley, and later publicized it in his "Hutchings Illustrated California Magazine" as well as several books. He became one of Yosemite's first settlers, promoted the area for the rest of his life, and was an innkeeper for the Calaveras Big Tree Grove Hotel. Hutchings died on October 31, 1902 after being thrown from his buggy while visiting Yosemite.
