Note:

Robinson Jeffers was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 10, 1887. He received a fine education, much of it in Germany and Switzerland between 1898-1902, during which time he began writing poetry. In 1903 he and his family moved to Southern California, and while he did well in college, he realized that poetry was his life's work. In 1906 he met Una Call Kustler, three years his senior and the wife of a prominent Los Angeles attorney. By 1910 they were involved in a covert love affair that was discovered and publicized two years later. In 1913 Una divorced her husband, after which she and Jeffers married and moved to Carmel, California. Here, he eventually built the two story stone Tor House and an accompanying tower. Over the years much of Jeffers' poetry focused on the need for humankind to connect to the beauty surrounding and not be so self centered. Una died in 1950, Robinson followed twelve years later on January 20, 1962.
