Note:

San Francisco's first Cliff House was a wooden structure on a spectacular site overlooking the Pacific Ocean, constructed by Charles Butler in 1863 (not by Sam Brannan in 1858, that honor falling to a nearby hostelry known as the Seal Rock House). The restaurant and resort became a destination spot for the city's elite, and after enlargement in 1868 also one of much nighttime revelry. Adolph Sutro bought the property in 1883, and after a fire destroyed the original building on Christmas Day, 1894 he replaced it with an elaborate, turreted castle. This structure survived the 1906 earthquake only to succumb to fire a year later. A new, more restrained Cliff House opened in 1909 and basically survives to the present day. The building closed during World War I and again for a number of years because of Prohibition and the Depression. Additions took place in the early 1950s, which were removed when the Cliff House was renovated beginning in 1998. By that time the property had become a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
