Abstract:

Correspondence primarily from Coalinga oil entrepreneur Max Shaffrath to his brother, Seattle attorney Paul Shaffrath. Other correspondents include Max Shaffrath's girlfriend Gladys Lathrop, his wife Margaret, Paul's wife Louise, and other family members and business associates. Several photographs and a few news clippings are also included.

Note:

Max Shaffrath (1875-1965) was born in Germany. His family immigrated to Waterbury, Connecticut; he attanded Storrs College in Amherst. In 1903 Shaffrath came to California to work for the Pacific Coast Oil Company, which two years previously had been bought by Standard Oil and eventually became Standard Oil of California, a predecessor of Chevron. Settling in Coalinga, Shaffrath also operated the Coalinga Banner Oil Company. In 1907 he married Margaret Dallas, the sister of his business partner Roderick W. Dallas, after the breakup of his longtime relationship with Gladys Lathrop.
