Note:
Grace Carpenter was born on February 21, 1865 in Potter Valley, Mendocino County, California. Exhibiting an early talent for
drawing, she enrolled in the California School of Design of the San Francisco Art Association. In 1890 she married Dr. John
Wilz napier Hudson of Ukiah and continued painting, her subjects being primarily the nearby Pomo Indians. Grace's husband
retired from his medical practice and devoted himself to the study of the Pomo language, and collected baskets and other artifacts
for the Field Museum in Chicago. Grace Carpenter Hudson died on March 23, 1937.
Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) was one of the premier illustrators, painters, and muralists of his time, concentrating largely
on the Indians and deserts of the Southwest.
