Hand-copied obituaries of Judge Joseph Bryant Crockett from the Bar Association of San Francisco and a Louisville, Kentucky newspaper, and articles on his nomination as State Supreme Court Justice from the "San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin" and the "San Francisco Examiner."

Note:

Joseph Bryant Crockett was born in Lexington, Kentucky on November 17, 1808, moved to Hopkinsville, Kentucky in his youth, studied law, and was apponted District Attorney after passing the bar. Elected to the Kentucky State Legislature, he began working towrd emancipation of the slaves. Crockett moved to St. Louis, where he engaged in journalism, but due to poor health went to San Francisco in 1852. There he joined a succession of law firms, worked against the 1856 Vigilance Committee, and helped found the Mercantile Library. In 1868 Crockett was appointed by Governor Haight to the California Supreme Court. He died in Fruitvale, California on January 15, 1884. The town of Crockett, California was named after him.
