Note:
Carl Eytel was born in Stuttgart, Germany on September 12, 1862 and became enamored of the American West after reading about
it in a local library. Despite a lack of funds and art training, he became determined to paint desert and ranch life, and
eventually settled permanently in California and Arizona, where he occasionally did ranch work and spent the rest of his time
making a meager living by painting, writing, and illustrating articles. Eytel illustrated George Wharton James' 1906 book
"The Wonders of the Colorado Desert." He died in Banning, California on September 17, 1925.
