Abstract:

Letters and envelopes, cards, photos, pressed flowers, verse and poetry, and a program. This collection consists mostly of letters written by Eckhardt to his girlfriend Marie Jochumsen in San Francisco (the majority during his World War I service). There are also a few letters written by Marie to Henry, some in Danish to Marie from her father, and some to Marie or Henry from others.

Note:

Henry A. Eckhardt was born in San Francisco on December 19, 1890. Marie M. Jochumsen was born in Denmark on September 29, 1896 and subsequently moved to San Francisco, where she met and began dating Henry by 1916. Henry was drafted into the United States Army in 1917, and went to France during World War I as a machinegunner in the 18th Infantry. Marie and Henry married sometime between 1921 and 1925 and lived the rest of their lives in San Francisco, where Henry worked as a fireman. They raised a son named Henry Jr. Henry Sr. died on September 27, 1962. Marie died on October 31, 1974.
During World War I the United States Army 18th Infantry, assigned to the 1st Expeditionary Division, participated in the following campaigns: Montdidier-Noyon, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine 1917, Lorraine 1918, and Picardy 1918. The regiment was awarded two French Croix de Guerre with Palm.
