Abstract:
Family photographs pertaining to Yvonne Chatters, a black woman born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1913 and later a resident
of Windsor, Ontario; Seattle, Washington; and Portland, Oregon. Collection consists chiefly of snapshots documenting multiple
generations of the Chatters family and their friends and associates, chiefly African Americans and Black Canadians. Most images
depict individuals or groups at leisure in domestic scenes or during social and recreational outings, mostly in the vicinity
of Seattle, Washington. Many individuals are depicted, including Yvonne, her sister Annie, her uncle Othello Pritchard Chatters
and her aunt Verna Chatters. Includes a few images of African American men in military uniform, some taken perhaps during
World War II. Also includes a photograph album compiled by Yvonne which includes newspaper clippings pertaining to her professional
and civic activities, including her employment at The Advocate, a Portland-based newspaper published for the city's African
American community, where she worked perhaps during her college years. Also includes a small number of studio portraits and
