Biography
Sadler was born at Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, on July 3, 1861; educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Oxford; became secretary
of the extension lectures sub-committee of the Oxford University examinations delegacy, 1885; director, office of special
inquiries and reports in the government Department of Education, 1895-1903; distinguished himself in England as an authority
on educational matters; professor of education, University of Manchester; became vice-chancellor, University of Leeds in 1911;
travelled to India as president of a commission on the University of Calcutta, 1917; master of University College, Oxford,
1923-34; also known as a patron of the arts and art collector; his son was Michael Sadleir, author and publisher; died in
1943.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of correspondence, holograph and printed articles, pamphlets, and clippings related to the Sadler's career
in education. Includes materials related to education in Great Britain and India. Also includes a diary of a trip to Switzerland.
