A card index has been made for items in this collection. Most of the letters have been published in the California Historical Society Quarterly, September 1956, pp. 205-131, as "A Mississippian in the Gold Fields."
The collection consists of typed copies of letters made by the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society from originals owned by Mary Davis and John Dart (nephew) of Bovina, Mississippi.
- Biographical / historical:

John Paul Dart came to California by ship in 1849 and worked as a miner. In 1874, he was elected county surveyor of Tuolumne County. He died in 1891.
