    Scope and Content

These papers consist of an extensive set of correspondence between Annie Montague Alexander and the directors of the museum between 1908 and 1949 and typescripts, manuscripts and notes for some of the publications issued as "Contributions from the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology."
The correspondence provides a record of Alexander's continuing support of the Museum, both through her own work and interests and through her monetary contributions.
The publications documented here are primarily the work of Joseph Grinnell and others:
The game birds of California, by Joseph Grinnell, Harold Child Bryant and Tracy Irwin Storer. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1918.
Animal life in the Yosemite ... by Joseph Grinnell and Tracy Irwin Storer. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1924.
Vertebrate natural history of a section of northern California through the Lassen Peak region, by Joseph Grinnell, Joseph Dixon, and Jean M. Linsdale. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1930.
Fur-bearing mammals of California ... by Joseph Grinnell, Joseph S. Dixon, and Jean M. Linsdale. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1937.
For the Lassen book there is in the collection only a partial set of the photographs used in the final publication, but for the other works there are sometimes extensive notes for each of the species in addition to the text as published. These notes may include a record of sightings, records of stomach contents and other information, sometimes extensive, not included in the final text. Some folders, however, consist of only the basic description.
