Scope and Content

Originally given to the University Archives by Professor Victor Lenzen, these papers were transferred to the Manuscripts Division of The Bancroft Library in March 1966. Additional notes by Joseph LeConte were a gift of his grandson, Joseph LeConte, December 17, 1981.
The collection contains papers of John LeConte and his wife -correspondence, mainly concerning the Civil War and the family in South Carolina, and his presidency of the University of California; some of his writings, obituaries and memorials. Also included are papers of his brother, Joseph LeConte, consisting of some correspondence, a few of his writings, notes on geology and other subjects; and papers of Joseph Nisbet LeConte (son of Joseph LeConte) relating for the most part to the settlement of his mother's estate. There is also a file of clippings and some miscellaneous genealogical information. Photographs have been removed to The Bancroft Library's Pictorial Collection.
