Abstract: Collection of papers (originals, drafts, and copies) relating to the
establishment, administration, and foreign relations of the Colonia Militar de la Frontera in Lower
California, under the command of Manuel Castro and successors. The collection includes correspondence of
Castro, Rafael Espinosa (inspector-in-chief of the colony and political chief of Lower California), Lt.
Jose Antonio Chaves, and many others; military registers, petitions for land and land grants;
regulations, orders and proclamations from the central and local governments; lists of funds and
equipment required, received or distributed; proceedings of cases tried in the colony; records of
international incidents; payrolls and receipts; passports, permits, et cetera.

These documents, part of the original H. H. Bancroft Collection, were formerly bound in two volumes. They
have been disassembled, repaired and placed in folders in the same sequence in which they were bound,
some items being placed in an oversize portfolio.There are dummies in the boxes indicating the location
of these oversize items and the report has also been annotated.
The collection, mainly correspondence and papers of Manuel Castro, contains originals, drafts and copies
of documents relating primarily to the establishment and administration of a military colony at the
frontier of Baja California, known as the Colonia Militar de la Frontera. Included are military papers,
regulations, accounts, petitions for land, proceedings of cases tried in the colony (notably the
investigation of the death of Isaac Banes), papers relating to the wreck of the steamer
Union, and items highlighting the conflict between Castillo Negrete and
Castro.
M-M 20 (v. 1) runs in a rough chronological order from 1848 to 1850. M-M 21 (v. 2) covers 1851 to 1859,
but also contains material back to 1848. A calendar of documents follows, and at the end of the report
is a partial list of correspondents.
