Biography
The first record of the Millerd Family of Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island appears in 1740 when Nathaniel Millerd signed
a promissory bond to Edward Thurber. Either this Nathaniel or his father died the following year in 1741. A Nathaniel Millerd
was born in February 1772 and married Betsey Green in 1793. The couple had five children between 1794 and 1806: Augustus,
Welcome, Julia, George, and Eliza. In 1800 Nathaniel Millerd was elected to a captaincy in the Rhode Island infantry. There
is no record of Nathaniel's death extant.
Scope and Content of Collection
Documents of the Millerd family, 1712-1900, including documents that provide birth and death dates for family members, debt
records, documentation of military service, and a set of manuscript sermons attributed to Squire Millerd. The documentation
in this collection is fragmentary, comprised mostly of single pieces of paper or short notes at sporadic intervals throughout
almost two centuries. The most extensive documents, the sermon books, are also incomplete, with no title pages, dates, or
authors clearly identified. Most of the documentation pertains to the Millerd family in eighteenth and early nineteenth-century
Rhode Island.
The collection is organized into two series: 1) SERMON BOOKS and 2) FAMILY DOCUMENTS.
SERIES 1: SERMON BOOKS
The SERMON BOOKS series contains two manuscript books attributed to Squire Millerd and dated ca. 1712.
SERIES 2: FAMILY DOCUMENTS
The second series, FAMILY DOCUMENTS, contains correspondence, geneologies, debt receipts, certificates of military service,
and other materials. The papers are arranged chronologically.
