Teaching material Series 2. 1957-1998

Physical Description: 7.6 Linear feet

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains files documenting Iser's career as a professor and international scholar. It includes texts and notes for lectures on English literature and literary theory, mostly given in Konstanz and Irvine; course readings and notes on readings; and related materials such as student notes and grading sheets.

Series Arrangement

This series is arranged chronologically. An exact date could not be determined for many items and approximate dates were supplied. Dates relating to a particular class or lecture do not always correspond to the time the material was created: Iser often taught certain classes more than once and reused older notes, which he corrected and revised, or substantially expanded. Course files can therefore contain documents created and reused across time periods, the older ones often designated by Iser with the indication alt (old) or ganz alt (oldest). The date on the folder normally indicates the year a particular class was taught for the last time. Course and lecture titles in German indicate material in German, and English titles indicate material in English.
Original order was maintained during processing of this collection. Iser also supplied a number of single-page notes with short content descriptions for individual folders. These notes were photocopied and included with their related files during processing. The material for a course or lecture is commonly subdivided into chapters, each probably reflecting a single session. Some early lecture material, however, is paginated throughout and not separated into chapters. All other materials that could not be associated with a chapter or within a paginated sequence are filed with their associated courses under "course-related miscellaneous material." In a few cases, Iser did not impose an order on the material, and so one was imposed during processing. Such cases are indicated in the container list by the note "Material arranged by topic during processing."
Since Iser's teaching was always closely related to his writings, further course-related material can be found in Series 3 under respective publications.
