and materials related to American journalist Eugene Field dating from approximately the
1870s to 1890s.
Background
Eugene Field (1850-1895), American poet and journalist, was born and raised in St. Louis
and in 1873 he married Julia Sutherland Comstock, also of Missouri. Before marrying Julia
Comstock, Field took an extended trip to Europe and on his return he began working for a
number of newspapers around the country, including St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, and
Chicago.
