Biography
One of the "Big Four" who built the Central Pacific Railroad, Charles
Crocker was a "hands-on" administrator, actually supervising construction of
the tracks. He later invested in large landholdings and developed the Del Monte
Hotel in Monterey County, Calif. (1880). The deed in this collection conveys
town lots in Reno, Nev. to one W.T.C. Elliott of that city (1868).
[Ms2.C938]
Benjamin F. Leete was one of Theodore Judah's surveyors and was present
at organizational meetings of the Central Pacific Railroad (1861). Leete lived
to be over ninety and was one who provided information for Robert L. Fulton's
"Epic of the Overland" (1924). He lived in the Reno area from 1870 until his
death. The stock certificates in this collection give evidence of his
involvment in the affairs of that city. Others of Leete's papers are in the
John D. Goodwin Collection at the California State Library. [Ms2.L487]
The Mariposa Mill was located northeast of Virginia City, Nevada, in
the Comstock area. Its 1882 payroll register provides personal names,
occupations and payments to employees, most of whom seem to have been immigrant
Irish. [Ms2.M342]
