Background
The Christmas Tree Growers of Monterey Bay was
formed in 1952 with a small number of growers in Santa Cruz meeting to share
ideas. Howard A. Neilson, owner of Crest Ranch, the oldest "Choose and Cut"
tree farm in the Western United States" was the first President. His "tree
plantation" was a new approach to producing and selling Christmas Trees in
California. In 1952, the organization had shortened it's name to
California Christmas Tree Growers and incorporated in 1956. Since then it has
grown from just grower members to include all aspects of the Real Tree industry
in California, including wholesalers, retail lot operators and suppliers and
changed it's name to the California Christmas Tree Association to reflect the
broad range of the members.
