Biography
Coronel, born in Mexico City in 1817, came to California with his father, Ignacio Coronel in 1834, as a
member of the Hijar-Padres colony. The family settled in Los Angeles. where Coronel soon became
prominent in local affairs, holding many public offices, including those of Juez de Paz, inspector of
missions and peace commissioner. He took part in the defense of California against the American invasion
in 1846 and 1847, but later became a citizen of the United States. In 1853 he was elected mayor, and for
many years afterwards was a member of the city council. He was state treasurer of California from 1867
to 1871. He died in 1894.
Scope and Content
These papers-originals, copies and extracts of documents-collected by H. H. Bancroft for his
History of California, relate particularly to the Los Angeles region, and include an
1839 census for that area.
The original collection is not to be used without
permission of the Director.
A bound volume of photocopy is available for consultation.
The documents, which were bound in a volume by H. H. Bancroft, have been unbound and placed in folders.
Some repaired items, now oversize, have been placed in a separate portfolio. This has been noted in the
report and in the first portfolio. The arrangement, roughly chronological, and the numbering are those
of H. H. Bancroft.
