Biographical / Historical

The Baldwin Locomotive Works was a Philadelphia-based steam locomotive production firm founded in 1831, producing locomotives for railroads around the world. They later merged with the Lima-Hamilton Corporation around 1950-1951 and became the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation.

Scope and Contents

This collection represents a small portion of the records of the Philadelphia steam locomotive production firm known as the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The materials include ledgers, specification books, and drawings for construction and decoration of locomotives, as well as publications of the company. One book deals with the railroads of South America. The material was donated in 1960 by E. Morton Grosser, a professor in the Department of History at the time. The collection also includes 436 copy slides (done in 1985) of paint books numbers 1 and 2; however these books (sometimes referred to as the Book of Styles) have been digitized and are viewable on Searchworks here: https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/4082933

Scope and Contents

Labeled "Painting Book No.1" followed by a number or code ("188" or "1SS"). Designs are numbered for each component (i.e. cab, tender, wheel). The following is transcribed from a note on the inside cover: "New tracings have been made for making prints to be used as templates for painting styles - as follows: Cab 15639 Cylinder 15641 Sand Box 15637 Wheel Cen. [Center] 15638 Tank, Saddle 15640 Tank, Tend. [Tender] 15642 ---- Motor Cab (to be made when needed) J.L.W. 1.23.09"

Scope and Contents

There is no label or title on this ledger, and it has been called "volume 2" in the interest of distinguishing it from the style book labeled "No. 1." At the front, there is a chart titled "Painting" listing the numerical codes for "Style ; Cab ; Cylinder ; Tank on Boiler ; Sand Box ; Driv. [Driver] ; Tender Tank" followed by the name of railroad company clients numbered 1-379.
