Biography

Evelyn Anderson was born in Willmar, Minnesota, March 20, 1899. She graduated from Carleton College in 1921 with a BA and received her MA in chemistry from the same institution in the following year. Continuing her education, she graduated MD from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, in 1928, and served an internship and residency at the University of Hospital. Her research interests took her to McGill University, where she was a National Research Council Fellow, working in the Department of Biochemistry with Dr. J.B. Collip. Dr. Anderson received her PhD from McGill in 1934, and returned to UCSF as an Instructor, and then Associate Professor of medicine. She was simultaneously a Research Associate with Herbert M. Evans at the Institutione of Experimental Biology at the Berkeley campus.
During a sabbatical year, 1946-47, Dr. Anderson was a Guggenheim Fellow in the Department of Physiology at Johns Hopkins University, working with Dr. Philip Bard. In 1947 she became Chief, Endocrinology Section, National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases, NIH, a position she held until 1962. In that year Dr. Anderson came to California, where she was a research scientist at Ames Research Center, Life Sciences, NASA, Moffitt Field, until her retirement.
Dr. Anderson was the author of over 200 publications and the recipient of many honors and awards. She received a DSc from Carleton College (1954), another from Woman's Medical College (1961), and the Alumni Achievement Award from the same institution (1961). She received the Federal Womans Award in 1964, and an achievement award from the American Swedish Historical Foundation in the same year. She was a member, and an officer of the Endocrine Society, a member of the editorial board of Endocrinology, and associate editor of Acta Neurovegetiva. Dr. Anderson belonged to Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, Sigma Xi, the American Physiological Society, the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, and other professional groups.
She was married to the late Webb Haymaker, MD, and had three children.
