Biography

Lengyel was born on January 1, 1915 in Fairfield, Connecticut; was editor, Federal Writers' Project, 1936-37; music critic for Coast (San Francisco), 1938-41; censor, Office of Censorship, San Francisco, 1942; shipwright and personnel interviewer, Kaiser Shipyards, Richmond, California, 1943-44; manager, Forty-Niner Theatre, Georgetown, California, 1946-49; editor, W.H. Freeman Company, 1952-54; founder and executive editor of Dragon's Tooth Press in 1970; visiting professor and lecturer, Sacramento State College, 1962-63; has been poet, historian, playright and translator; books include: First Poems (1940), The Atom Clock (1951), Four Days in July: the Story Behind the Declaration of Independence (1958), and I, Benedict Arnold (1960).

Collection consists of literary manuscripts of California writer Cornel Adam Lengyel. Includes plays, poems, fiction, and history. A 1961 Record, Selected Poems by Cornel Lengyel, is stored in Collection 249, box 10.
