    Biography

    Charles William Hendel was born in Saxony July 21, 1831. In 1853, he came to California and mined for gold on the American River in Sierra County. In 1860, he became Sierra County Surveyor. In 1871, he was appointed a U.S. Deputy Surveyor and moved to La Porte in Plumas County. In 1879, he was elected Plumas County Surveyor. He owned a large interest in the Alturas tailing mine on Slate Creek and nearly all claims on Port Wine ridge, known as the Lucky Gold Hill Mine which covered nearly 800 acres. He died September 17, 1920.
