Abstract: Franklin David Murphy (1916-1994) was the Chancellor at the University of Kansas (1951-60), Chancellor at UCLA (1960-68), Chairman of the Board and CEO (1968) and Chairman of the Executive Committee (1981-86) of the Times Mirror Company. Murphy was active in philanthropic, cultural, scientific, and financial organizations and received many awards and honorary degrees. The collection consists primarily of materials related to Dr. Franklin D. Murphy's career at the Times Mirror Company, as Chancellor of the University of Kansas and UCLA, and as a member of Presidential commissions and boards of various philanthropic, financial, and cultural institutions.

Biography

Franklin David Murphy was born in Kansas City, Missouri, January 29, 1916; AB, University of Kansas (1936) and MD, University of Pennsylvania, (1941); instructor (1946-48), Dean of the School of Medicine (1948-51), and Chancellor (1951-60) at the University of Kansas; Chancellor at the UCLA, 1960-68; joined the Times Mirror Company as Chairman of the Board and CEO (1968) and became Chairman of the Executive Committee (1981-86); active in philanthropic, cultural, scientific, and financial organizations and received many awards and honorary degrees; major UCLA contributions include the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, development of the William Andrews Clark Library, and a number of primary research collections in the UCLA Library; died in Los Angeles, June 16, 1994.

Collection consists primarily of materials related to Dr. Franklin D. Murphy's career at the Times Mirror Company, as Chancellor of the University of Kansas and UCLA, and as a member of Presidential commissions and boards of various philanthropic, financial, and cultural institutions. Includes academic, chronological, and correspondence files, honors and awards, photographs, printed materials, speeches, statements, speeches, memorabilia, and realia. Also includes material about the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Armand Hammer's proposed gift collected by Franklin Murphy.
