Background
George Reeb, of German descent, was born in Alsace Lorraine on May 20, 1831. He came overland to California from Ontario,
Canada and established a butcher shop in Hornitos in 1852 called the Hornitos Market. He also worked mining claims and bought
mining property. On March 19, 1863, he married Rosina Hunziker in Hornitos. Reeb owned 313 acres and farmed over a thousand
produceing barley wheat, hay, and lumber. He also engaged in land speculation. He was elected and served several years as
Town Trustee of Hornitos, the only incorporated town in Mariposa County.
