Abstract: Eddie Hearn (1913-1987) was a founding member of the UCLA Theater Arts Department, and was largely responsible for the UCLA
Macgowan Hall production facilities. He retired from UCLA (1978) and began designing or consulting on theaters around the
world and was responsible for the continental seating concept installed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles.
The collection consists of working scripts, theater brochures and programs, set designs, theater building plans, and student
assignments related to Hearn's career as a UCLA instructor and theater designer.

Biography/History
Eddie Hearn (b. 1913) came to UCLA in 1947 and was a founding member of the UCLA Theater Arts Department; served as theater
consultant to Charles Luckman and Associates, Los Angeles architectural firm, 1962-63, and was largely responsible for the
UCLA Macgowan Hall production facilities; retired from UCLA, June 30, 1978; designed or consulted on theaters around the world
and was responsible for the continental seating concept installed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles; he was
also involved in the design of both the Japan America Theater in Los Angeles and the UC Santa Barbara campus theater; he died
of cancer April 22, 1987.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of materials related to Hearn's career as a UCLA instructor and theater designer. Includes working scripts,
theater brochures and programs, set designs, theater building plans, and student assignments. The majority of student work
in the collection was done for two of Hearn's classes: Contemporary theater (TA 240) and Advanced problems in design for the
theater (TA 243).
