Background
Mary Eudora Garoutte was born in Woodland. She began working in the California State
Library in 1899. She was placed in charge first of bringing the California newspapers
into order and then of gathering other California material into a department of its own.
She served as head of the California Section for 34 years. At the time of her retirement,
the California Section contained 13,000 volumes. She was active in civic and library
affairs until her death in Alameda, January 8, 1943.
