History

It is not clear when Detachment 035 of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps was originally established at Fresno State College (now California State University, Fresno) but the earliest documentation of the unit dates back to February 5, 1952.
The unit was originally established in order to offer the option of two years of basic military training to all physically fit male undergraduates no less than fourteen years of age, and an advanced class in military training for the remainder of the undergraduate course. The unit's first year of operations started with eighty-four cadets. Detachment 035 was the first unit in the United States to have a woman enroll in a lower division course of Air Science as well as the first to admit community college students to its program when it accepted fifteen men from Fresno City College.
On December 5, 1980, the detachment was awarded the Air Force Oustanding Unit award by Colonel Charles H. Wilson, the Western Area Commander.
There was also a women's auxiliary to the Air Force ROTC called Angel Flight. These women raised money for events such as balls and field days enjoyed by Angel Flight members and the men in the AFROTC.
