    Scope and Content

The Crown Zellerbach Corporation was formed in 1928 by the merger of the Zellerbach Paper Company and Crown Willamette Paper Company, both of which in turn had been formed by the mergers of several other companies and their predecessors. In addition, various companies and their subsidiaries were purchased or formed after the 1928 merger, culminating in 1985 with the acquisition of Crown Zellerbach Corporation by James River Corporation.
In 1954, the Executive Committee of Crown Zellerbach Corporation of Nevada (1894-1986), established and issued, as General Order 57, the "policy of the Corporation to identify, preserve, record and index all Corporate records, documents and undocumented events and decisions which have historical meaning." The Crown Zellerbach History Committee was delegated with the responsibility to develop and implement the procedures and instructions necessary to carry out the policy. The files of the History Committee were a major resource in identifying and establishing the organization of this collection. Twelve major branches formed the pre-1985 Crown Zellerbach organization and these have been used as the basis which forms the 12 series into which these records have been organized. The Overview of Collection Series, following on page xvii, gives a detailed listing and brief history of each of the 184 companies identified.
The Crown Zellerbach Corporation collection contains records of various kinds from sixty-one of the 184 companies which were related in some manner to the parent companies. Minute books, bylaws, financial and stock records, subject and clipping files, a small amount of correspondence, biographical sketches, company publications, and photographs are, in many cases, all that remains to document the existence of these many interests, primarily in the Pacific Northwest.

    Overview of Collection Series

The twelve major branches which grew to become Crown Zellerbach Corporation were used as the basis to form the organization of this collection into 12 series. Each of the 184 companies identified as being related to Crown Zellerbach has been assigned a distinct number which begins with the series number, thus identifying the company through which each came to be related to or associated with Crown Zellerbach. This numbering scheme also serves to clearly identify the records of a specific company, as often the names were used, discontinued, resurrected, changed, bought, and sold with some frequency.
The twelve series and the first or "parent" company within each are:
    • 1.1 Crown Paper Company
    • 2.1 Columbia River Paper Company
    • 3.1 Crown Columbia Pulp and Paper Company
    • 4.1 Floriston Pulp and Paper Company
    • 5.1 Willamette Pulp and Paper Company of California
    • 6.1 Crown Willamette Paper Company
    • 7.1 Zellerbach Paper Company
    • 8.1 Crown Zellerbach Corporation of Nevada
    • 9.1 Crown Willamette Paper Company (a division of CZ) -see 6.1
    • 10. 1 Pacific Mills Ltd. -see 6.3
