    Biography

    John C. Gibson came to California by ship from New York in 1851. In 1852-53 he mined for gold. From 1855, he was engaged in riverboating on the Sacramento River between the cities of Sacramento, Marysville, and San Francisco. He was part owner of the Kate Bateman, also serving as its Chief Engineer. In 1861, he worked for the California Steam Navigation Company and captained the Defiance.
