Background

The Girls' High School of San Francisco was an accredited high school whose graduates were admitted without examination to any course of study at the University of California and Stanford University. The school building was equipped with laboratories, an Assembly Hall, and an Art Department. The school offered three courses of study to its students: the Scientific Course, Latin Scientific Course, and Classical Course. The Scientific Course included science, mathematics, English, history, French or German, drawing, and elocution. The Latin Scientific Course was the same as above except for the omission of one science class and the substitution of Latin for French or German. The Classical Course included Latin, Greek, history, English, mathematics, drawing, and elocution. Graduates of all of these three courses could go on to universities or the Normal Course, which was a part of the high school that prepared its students to be teachers and offered Teachers' Certificates.
