Scope and Content

This series documents the connections of Father Bernard Hubbard through the conversations between himself and his friends, family, coworkers, and fans, along with many others. The bulk of this series consists of letters to Father Hubbard, newspaper clippings relevant to their neighboring correspondence, and research notes. The series also contains the correspondence and various documents of people who either had some relation to Hubbard or maintained research relevant to him.

Scope and Content

This series documents the life of Father Hubbard as a popular priest, explorer and lecturer through a variety of related materials. The bulk of the collection consists of newspaper and magazine publications, lecture programs and posters, certificates, photographs, and postcards. The series also contains many other forms of documents relevant to Father Hubbard, such as religious materials and awards, along with the papers of people who either had some relation to Hubbard or maintained research relevant to him. Please note that additional items such as certificates, posters, photos, and rotogravure can be found in Series VIII: Oversize Materials.

This series documents Father Hubbard’s belongings and collected items throughout his time as a priest and an explorer. The bulk of the collection consists of artifacts discovered in Alaska and religious materials used for his daily mass, along with a collection of printing blocks. The series also contains medals from his Medal of the Month program, objects used when exploring such as boots, a nautical flag, and research equipment. Scope and Content

This series documents the photographs that Fr. Hubbard took in Alaska through his various expeditions there. The collection consists both of black and white photographs as well as colored photographs. The photographs depict various individuals that Fr. Hubbard encountered, geographic formations, and the daily life of various Inuit peoples. Prints and negatives are in black and white unless otherwise noted.

SERIES VII: Films, 1914-1996

Scope and Content

This series documents Fr. Hubbard’s personal and professional filmmaking. The collection consists of unedited footage from Fr. Hubbard’s expeditions in Alaska, various incidents throughout his personal life, and other projects. This series consists of 16 mm film, VHS and U-Matic tapes.
In 1993, a portion of the Hubbard Film Collection was deposited with the Human Studies Film Archives of the Smithsonian Institution. Under the agreement, SCU retained ownership of the films and reserved the right to permit copying, but the HSFA assumed responsibility for preservation and reference copying. SCU has been provided with video copies of the films that were donated to the HSFA. These videos can be found in boxes 7-10 of this series. The HSFA video show footage shot by Fr. Hubbard on King Island. A detailed record of the footage in this series was created by Fr. Hubbard. This information can be found in the “Shot Lists” in boxes 12 and 13 of this series.
There is currently no inventory available for the 16 mm films in boxes 1-5 of the collection, however, an inventory of the videos in box 11 is available upon request.
