R.A. (Raleigh Ashlin) Skelton (1906-1970) was a author and contributor to
British Museum quarterly,
Geographical journal, and
Mariner's mirror. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquarians, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and a member of the Royal
Commonwealth Society. His published books include
Decorative printed maps of the 15th to 18th centuries (c. 1952),
Explorers' maps: chapters in the cartographic record of geographical discovery (1958), and
The European image and mapping of America, A.D. 1000-1600 (1964). The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, galleys, reproductions of illustrations, and glass negatives
relating to the production of the book,
James Cook, Surveyor of Newfoundland, which has an introduction written by Skelton.

Skelton was born in 1906 in Plymouth, England; MA, D. Lit., Cambridge University; Fellow of the Society of Antiquarians, Fellow
