Series I.  Black Mountain College and its critical reception, 1943-ca. 1982

Scope and Content Note

Series I contains papers from Richards's time at Black Mountain College as well as papers by Richards and others about Black Mountain College. The series is arranged in two subseries: Period of Black Mountain College, 1943-1954, and Critical reception of Black Mountain College, after its closing, 1961-ca. 1982.

Series II.  Correspondence, ca. 1935-ca. 1994

Physical Description: 27 boxes 12 lin. ft.

Scope and Content Note

The largest part of the archive, the correspondence in Series II is arranged in two subseries: Letters from M.C. Richards and Letters to M.C. Richards. Most letters are signed and enclosures are usually kept with the correspondence. Business and personal correspondence are both present, with roughly three quarters being personal. Arts education is a frequent theme throughout the correspondence. In addition, there is a large amount of "fan mail," especially from readers of her popular book, Centering.

Series II.B holds letters from friends, family, writers, musicians, artists. Among her correspondents are John Cage, David Tudor, Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, Lyle Bongé, George Brecht, Sari Dienes, James Leo Herlihy, Arthur Penn, Merce Cunningham, and Robert Creeley. Some of the largest files consist of letters from her closest friends, among them Paulus Berensohn, Carolyn Bilderbeck, Remy Charlip, Molly Frances, Charity James, and Barbara Kazankis.
