Scope and Content

These papers, acquired in 1875 from Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, form part of the H. H. Bancroft Collection. They consist of correspondence, documents, accounts, and vouchers relating mainly to General Plácido Vega's mission to obtain weapons and funds in San Francisco for the republican government of Mexico against the French invasion. There is also material concerning the Mexican patriotic societies in California, Vega's activities with American volunteers in forming an expedition to Mexico, and military operations in Mexico.
Three volumes of correspondence and documents, M-M 325, M-M 326, and M-M 327, were unbound and the contents placed in folders. The original order and numbering have been retained. The arrangement of these three volumes is roughly chronological, with some overlapping of material in each volume. Some items upon being repaired were placed in an oversize portfolio. Dummies have been placed in the boxes for these items, and the report annotated.
A brief description of the contents of each volume follows, and a partial list of correspondents may be found at the end of the report.
