Contains articles, transcripts, and books, and their drafts about geology, with a few writings for the Boy Scouts of America. Notable published writings by Matthes include The Incomparable Valley (1950) and François Matthes and the Marks of Time (1962) both published posthumously through the effort of Matthes' colleague Fritiof M. Fryxell and his wife Edith. In a few instances Matthes' articles appear on the verso side of published maps. These served as commentaries and provided the public with more in-depth information about the area represented on the maps.

When only an abstract exists for a writing there is a note stating, "abstract only" at the end of the folder title. Among the Other Writings is "Little Studies in the Yosemite Valley," a collection of small articles devoted to specific topics regarding Yosemite. Although Matthes wrote five articles for "Little Studies in the Yosemite Valley," the first article is missing from this collection.
