Biography

Burchell, an English born novelist, used 17th century England as a backdrop for most of his novels; he came to California and used Redlands in the early days of the automobile as a locale for his book, Jacob Peek, Orange Grower (1915); his other books include: In the Days of King James (1898), The Duke's Servants (1899), Daniel Herrick (1900), My Lady of the Bass (1903), The Prisoner of Carisbrooke (1904), The Mistress of the Robes (1905), The Grip of Fear (1906), Clods and Clover (1908), and Shepherd of the People (1924).

Scope and Content

Collection contains manuscripts, typescripts, clippings, and photographs related to the life and work of novelist Sidney Herbert Burchell. Includes manuscripts and drafts for several of his books, some of which are: A Lost Crusoe, Music in My Life, The Ghie-maiden, and Jacob Peek, Orange Grower. Also includes a collection of 17th century maps of England and London, 19th century English children's books, and pictures used for the book jacket of Jacob Peek, Orange Grower.
