Background
The Stockton Police Department was founded in 1850. During the period represented by these records, the depart ment was made up of thirteen officers, a captain and a chief. From 1885 until 1890 the police station was located between Hunter and Market Streets. Later the department was housed on the first floor of the county courthouse. The city and San Joaquin County shared a jail on Market Street between Hunter and San Joaquin until a new jail---later referred to as "Cunningham's Castle" for long-time County Sheriff, Thomas Cunningham---opened at the corner of San Joaquin and Channel Streets (1893).
