Organizational History
The Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA) was founded as an association in Los
Angeles in 1921 to promulgate yacht racing rules and promote wider participation in yachting
activities. Its articles of incorporation were adopted in 1922 and later revised with the
addition of by-laws in 1938. SCYA became a nonprofit corporation in 1950 or 1951. By 1953
the association represented 28 member clubs spanning from Ventura to San Diego counties. As
of 2000, the association boasts over 80 member clubs. Further information concerning the
SCYA can be found on their website, http://www.scya.org.
The first and largest yachting association in Southern California, the SCYA promoted wider
participation in yachting activities through its publicity campaigns, particularly through
annual regattas, boat parades, and races. Members adhered to SCYA rules and regulations
governing all aspects of boat racing, addressing such issues as boating safety and yacht
maintenance. Today, the SCYA continues to support and foster amateur and professional
yachting through its support of boating education, races, regattas, and safety at sea.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection contains the administrative files of the Southern California Yachting
Association (SCYA) from 1921 to the mid-1960s, including articles of incorporation and
by-laws, manuals for member clubs, meeting minutes, yacht club membership rosters and
yearbooks, correspondence, circulars and flyers, master calendars, and other official
records. Also included is a small collection of material on other yachting organizations in
California and Arizona, as well as affiliate organizations of the SCYA.
The majority of material consists of meeting minutes and official correspondence with
member clubs and affiliate organizations dated between 1922 and 1965. These records document
association membership and dues; club delegates and officers; regattas, boat parades,
trophies, and races; reports from meetings; harbor and boating regulations; deeds of gift;
and dinners, dances, and galas. All correspondence is arranged chronologically, not
topically. Also included within the correspondence are ephemera such as newsclippings of
articles featuring the SCYA. Topical files contain material issued by individual member
clubs about their activities.
