Abstract: James Horton Shankland (1846-1923) was an attorney for the San Francisco Board of Trade for thirteen years before relocating to Los Angeles in 1888 where he founded, and was an officer of, the Los Angeles Bar Association. Joseph Smith Fowler (1820-1902) practiced law in Tennessee before serving as state comptroller (1862-65) and U.S. Senator (1866-71). His daughter, Louisa Fowler, married James Horton Shankland in 1874. The collection consists of correspondence, papers, and scrapbooks related to James Horton Shankland and his involvement with the Los Angeles Driving Club and his legal practice in Los Angeles. A portion of the collection consists of Fowler family material and includes correspondence, papers, and diaries of Joseph S. Fowler.

Biography

James Horton Shankland was born in Nashville, Tennessee, August 12, 1846; received law diploma from Brown's University, 1869; returned to Tennessee and admitted to the bar, 1870; came to San Francisco, California in 1874 where he served as attorney for the San Francisco Board of Trade for thirteen years; relocated to Los Angeles in 1888; partner, Graves, O'Melveny, and Shankland, 1888-1904; partner with son-in-law, Shankland & Chandler, 1904-14; was a founder and early officer of the Los Angeles Bar Association; married Louisa Fowler, daughter of Joseph S. Fowler, 1874; died January 24, 1923.
Joseph Smith Fowler was born in Steubenville, Ohio, August 31, 1820; graduated from Franklin College, 1843; studied law in Bowling Green, Kentucky; admitted to the Tennessee bar and practiced until 1861; comptroller of Tennessee, 1862-65; U.S. Senator, 1866-71; his daughter, Louisa Fowler, married James Horton Shankland in 1874; resumed his law practice in Washington, D.C., until his death on April 1, 1902.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of materials related to the Shankland and Fowler families. Most of the collection contains correspondence, papers, and scrapbooks related to James Horton Shankland and his involvement with the Los Angeles Driving Club and his legal practice in Los Angeles. A portion of the collection (box 5) consists of Fowler family material and includes correspondence, papers, and diaries of Joseph S. Fowler. Also includes genealogies of the Shankland, Fowler, and Scovel families.
