    Administrative Information

    Acquisition Information

The greater part of this collection of records of the Grabhorn Press was given by Mrs. Edwin Grabhorn, over a period of years from 1969 to 1973, first to the General Library's Rare Books and Special Collections Department, and later to The Bancroft Library. Some additional material was purchased from Mrs. Grabhorn in August 1973 and a few items were also contributed by Oscar Lewis, Roger Levenson, and Sherwood Grover. Further additions were received as part of the Heller Bequest in 1988.

    Scope and Content

The records of Grabhorn Press, 1917-1973, consist of correspondence and project files relating mainly to works printed by the press, along with extensive business and financial records, and a few miscellaneous papers.
The Grabhorn Press was founded in 1920 in San Francisco, California, by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn. Their correspondence with authors, artists, and other printers relates chiefly to the work of the press, but also includes two letters written by Edwin in 1918-19, while he was still in Indianapolis.
Project files kept by the Grabhorn Press include manuscripts, illustrations, galleys, and various incomplete segments and trial pieces of many of the Press' works. These are listed by author and/or title, and include the citation number from the Grabhorn Press Bibliography. Miscellaneous Papers contains awards and clippings the Grabhorns kept about the press.
Business and financial records represent the greatest bulk within the collection, and consist of bank statements, check stubs, accounts for the purchase of papers, ink, and other printing supplies, order and sales statements, with some miscellaneous business, tax, and insurance records.
