Description
Primarily letters from William R. Hearst and other members of his staff, and copies or drafts of Hastings' replies. Hastings was editor of the New York Journal, 1906-26, and supervising editor of several newspapers in the Hearst Service, 1926-42. Included also are Mss. of two of his plays and letters from actors and producers relating to his efforts to have them performed; clippings; and biographical information.
Background
John R. Hastings was supervising editor of the Hearst newspapers from 1926 until his death in 1942. He began his long newspaper career, after graduation from high school, on the Los Angeles Express, going from there to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner, the New York Press and Evening Telegram, the New York Daily News, the New York Globe the New York Times, and the New York Journal, for which he served as managing editor from 1906 to 1926.
