Abstract: The Manuzio family were renowned Venetian printers. Aldo Manuzio (1449 or 50-1515) was a Venetian printer who founded the Aldine Press and started the Hellenic Academy at Venice that contributed to the cause of learning in Italy. The collection consists of 26 portraits, mostly engravings, of members of the Manuzio family of printers.

Biography

The Manuzio family were renowned Venetian printers. Aldo Manuzio (1449 or 50-1515) was a Venetian printer who founded the Aldine Press, which issued 96 works of 27 Greek authors; he started the Hellenic Academy at Venice, contributing greatly to the cause of learning in Italy; his son Paolo, born in Venice on June 12, 1512, succeeded his father in the management of the Press; also became known as a humanist scholar for his work on Cicero; he died on April 6, 1574 in Rome.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of 26 Italian, German, and French portraits, mostly engravings, of members of the Manuzio family of printers, mainly of the elder Aldo and Paolo, with one of the younger Aldo.
