Scope and Content of Collection
The Clovis E. Byers Papers, acquired in 1964, consist of correspondence, memoranda, diaries, speeches and writings, clippings,
personnel records, and audio-visual material, relating to the Pacific Theater during World War II, the Army of Occupation
in Japan, the Korean War, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization command in Europe.
The
Correspondence, identified as Byers' personal file, includes official correspondence, letters exchanged with friends and colleagues in the
military, letters Byers wrote to his family from overseas, and Byers' personal business correspondence.
The bulk of the materials included in the
Military File originated from Byers' various assignments with the army. His trips to Korea, the Philippines, Japan, and Europe resulted
from his military duties and his association with the NATO Defense College. The
Photographs also reflect his assignments in the Pacific, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and Europe.
As required by law, security-classified materials have been removed from the collection until they can be declassified by
government officials.
